Labour accounts for the biggest
expense quotient for the company, which has launched several
welfare schemes, including free medical facilities for the
work force.
The Panitola estate has a large
central hospital with qualified doctors and support staffs to
cater to all medical exigencies. All the other gardens have
smaller hospitals, each with an ambulance. Free eye camps,
anti-maleria programmes, vasectomy and anti-polio drives are
regular features.
Labourers are provided free
protective clothing, gloves, footwears, blankets and mosquito
nets. Special teams maintain hygiene at labour accomodations.
Other facilities for the work
force include free supply of portable water and firewood, free
housing and education for their children, and the capital cost
of electrification at workers residences'. The company has
also undertaken extensive forestation programmes in each of
its 12 gardens.
