Our Founder, Mr. M. K Shah
entered the Russian market in the late eighties. Since his
early times as a private tea broker, Mr. Shah had understood
the importance of going retail, i.e. reaching the ultimate
consumer. With this mindset, he launched his first brands -
The MK Supreme and The MK Classique. In these, he supplied
quality Indian CTC teas selected from some of the best Assam
estates.
In a very short span of time, both these brands became
immensely popular, especially in interior Russia. Seeing the
success of his CTC variants, the company then ventured into
the orthodox tea market, and launched the first orthodox brand
of MK Rajah.
By the turn of the century, Mr. Shah observed that the
spending power of the average Russian is increasing by leaps
and bounds. Seeing this pattern, he understood that soon like
other commodities, there is bound to be a rise in demand for
premium quality CTC as well as Orthodox teas. Keeping this in
mind, in 2004, he introduced the MK Golden Assam and the
MK Shahi Chai. These premium category brands aim to cater to
the cream de la cream of the Russian population.
Also by the turn of the century, with the increase in Tea bag
Consumption, all 5 MK brands were made available in Tea Bags
as well as Pillow bags.
In 2004, when the Govt. of Russia increased the customs
import duty on packed goods by four times its original
structure. It became economically unviable to export packed
goods to Russia any longer. Hence Mr. Shah, imported machinery
from Argentina and India, and established a state of the art
packing plant at St. Petersburg in Russia.
With this, the company started exporting bulk goods from
India, value adding on them at our Russian unit, thus saving
on massive amounts of expenditures on duty.
